HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
The Fairey Duckling was produced during the 1950s & 60s by Fairey Marine in Hamble to a design by the legendary naval architect Uffa Fox. The Duckling dinghy was essentially a sailing or rowing tender produced by the hot moulded method of double diagonal laminates of glued Agba. This produces a vessel of great strength and as such, they became a familiar sight in many marinas and harbours as built in relatively large numbers. Today the Duckling is much sought after as a traditional tender to a classic motor or sailing yacht and are now relatively rare and difficult to find in good condition.
This example, number 1427 dating from 1957 was a barn find in storage for over 10 years, originally part of a fleet of Ducklings racing at Bosham Sailing Club. She has been refurbished with new rubbing strakes and gunwale. The hull has been stripped inside and out and finished with 8 coats of varnish.
New Jeckell Sails October 2019.
Re-varnished timber spars. Gunter sloop rig.
Oars & Rowlocks.
Road trailer, re-painted.
The Duckling Dinghy has become an iconic mid-century design and is as practical and usable as when first produced some 70 years ago. A stable and dependable dinghy for youngsters to learn to sail and a stylish addition to a classic yacht being relatively lightweight for lifting aboard or for putting on a car roof rack with the mast stowing inside the boat.
